'Keepers of the Dream' to look
at advancing urban education

Nationally known educators Jonathan Kozol and Edmund Gordon, professor emeritus of psychology at Yale, will be the main speakers at a conference on Friday, June 9, presented by the School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry.

The 7th annual conference of the Division of Prevention and Community Research is titled "Keepers of the Dream: Advancing Research, Policy & Practice in Urban Education." It will be held at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

Kozol, a National Book Award winner and author of several books, including his newest about inner-city schools, will discuss "The Shame of the Nation: Dangerous Policies and Regressive Practices in America's Persistently Unequal and Rapidly Resegregating Public Schools." He will speak at 9:30 a.m.

"Keeping the Dream Alive: A Conversation with Jonathan Kozol and Edmund Gordon" will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Gordon, senior scholar in residence at The College Board and a longtime champion of improving educational opportunity, particularly for ethnic and cultural minorities, will speak at 3:30 p.m. on "Learning In and Out of School."

There will be concurrent workshops and panel presentations throughout the day.

The public is invited. Registration is required, and seating is limited. The fee is $65 and includes a buffet luncheon.
