The Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE), an international quarterly dealing with industry and the environment, celebrated two major achievements this year -- its 10th anniversary and its inclusion in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIExp), an important benchmark in scientific publishing.
The peer-reviewed journal is published by MIT Press, owned by Yale University and headquartered at Yale's School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES). JIE's editor-in-chief is Reid Lifset, associate director of the Industrial Environmental Management Program at F&ES.
JIE marked its 10th anniversary on May 11 with a panel discussion at Yale on the past and future of industrial ecology. Among the distinguished speakers were John Ehrenfeld, executive director of the International Society for Industrial Ecology and co-editor of JIE; Faye Duchin, professor of economics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a world leader in input-output analysis for environmental assessment; Ramesh Ramaswamy, director and founder of the Resource Optimization Initiative in Bangalore, India, the leading organization applying industrial ecology in developing countries; and Charles Powers, chair of the Project on Industrial Ecology, Pollution Prevention, and the New York/New Jersey Harbor at the New York Academy of Sciences.
JIE's acceptance in SCIExp, which is maintained by Thomson/Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), means that the journal is carried by Current Contents, an abstracting and indexing service used by researchers worldwide. Approximately 2,000 new journals are reviewed every year by the ISI staff and only 10% to 12% are accepted for inclusion.
In addition, a recent article in the journal Business, Strategy and the Environment ranked JIE as the number-one journal dedicated to publishing in the field known as Organizations and Natural Environment. The article assessed the quality of the academic, practitioner, general management and specialty journals that publish articles in the environmental strategy and management field.
