Manuscripts and Archives

Manuscripts and Archives will offer a general introduction to the department on Thursday, Sept. 29.

A major center for primary source research at Yale, Manuscripts and Archives is known for its collections on the University and New Haven, although the materials held by the department have a far broader sweep. They document a wide array of subject areas including public policy and administration; diplomacy and international affairs; political and social thought and commentary; and science, medicine and the environment, among others. Collections on Africa and Latin America are also substantial.

The orientation session, which is open to the public, will be of particular interest to new faculty, undergraduates beginning work on seminar papers and senior essays, and graduate students investigating topics for research utilizing the holdings of the department. It will include information on searching the department's databases and finding aids and tools for identifying sources beyond Yale.

The session will take place in the Cowles Reference Center, Rm. 150, Sterling Memorial Library, from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. For more information or to register, contact the department at mssa.assist@yale.edu or (203) 432-1744.

Benefit performance

In response to Hurricane Katrina, a group of students at the Yale School of Drama have joined forces to create "Vagabond's Paradise: A Celebration of New Orleans in Words and Music."

This evening of original music, poetry and theater celebrating the spirit of New Orleans will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, at the Yale Cabaret, 217 Park St. All proceeds from the event will go to the American Red Cross in its efforts to aid those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The evening will also feature a silent auction and raffle showcasing goods and services donated by local merchants and School of Drama artists, including original artwork, design and party planning services, theater tickets and restaurant packages.

Doors open and the silent auction will begin at 7:30 p.m. The one-time only performance of "Vagabond's Paradise" will begin at 8:30 p.m.

A $15 donation at the door is suggested. Beverages will be available for purchase. Reservations may be made by calling (203) 432-1567.
