Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa chats with President Richard C. Levin.

Crown Prince of Bahrain visits Yale

His Royal Highness Shaikh Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Bahrain, visited Yale on Sept. 13.

During his stay, in meetings with President Richard C. Levin, other University leaders and faculty who are teaching and studying the Middle East, he discussed how to promote the study of the region at the University and ways Yale can be more engaged there.

The study of the Middle East at Yale dates back to 1841 when it became the first U.S. university to offer a formal program in Near Eastern languages. Currently, the University offers nearly 200 courses -- including more than 40 language courses on the Middle East -- that attract nearly 3,500 student enrollments annually. These are taught by more than 30 faculty members whose work focuses on the Middle East. Yale has about 200 students and scholars in residence from the Middle Eastern countries.

His Highness also met with two students from Bahrain: Fatema Ghazi Al-Arayedh, a junior in Yale College, and Khalid Fakhro, a doctoral student in the Biology and Biomedical Sciences.
