Noted director to be guest at Calhoun College master's tea
Calhoun College will host a master's tea with Casey Childs, the founder of Primary Stages, on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Childs will speak at 4:30 p.m. in the Calhoun College master's house, 434 College St. The talk is free and open to the public.
Childs has directed many productions for the company, including works by Lanie Robertson, Lee MacDougal, Jack Heifner, Bill Leavengood and Edwin Sanchez.
He served as the artistic program director for the New Dramatists from 1981 until 1985 and has directed and taught at many regional theaters and universities.
Last season, Childs conceived and directed the one-woman show "Woman Before a Glass," written by Lanie Robertson and starring Mercedes Ruehl, which recently concluded a four month run off-Broadway at the Promenade Theatre.
The vice president of the Directors' Guild of America, Childs has received two Emmy Awards and many nominations for his extensive work in television, and is the recipient of a Commitment to Playwrights' Award from his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University.
Michael J. Puma, president of Chesapeake Research Associates LLC and an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University School of Public Policy, will speak in the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy lecture series on Friday, Oct. 7.
His talk, titled "The National Head Start Impact Study: First Year Findings" will be held at 11:30 a.m. in Rm. 116, William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. The event is free and open to the public. For further information, e-mail sandra.bishop@yale.edu or call (203) 432-9935.
Puma is considered to be an expert in program evaluation, with over 30 years of experience conducting major national studies in education, child and youth development, nutrition assistance, and employment and training.
Puma's current research activities include serving as principal investigator for the National Head Start Impact Study, the first rigorous evaluation of the Head Start program. This six-year study follows a nationally representative sample of about 5,000 children in about 400 Head Start centers from age 3 through the end of first grade.
Puma is also principal investigator for a randomized trial of a new writing instruction program for elementary school children and senior researcher for a national experimental study of alternative teacher certification.
Other recent research includes a national study of the reform of education for children with disabilities and the examination of programs designed to improve education for disadvantaged children, comprehensive school reform and out-of-school time programs.
