Events pay tribute to former University printer Greer Allen
The legacy of renowned graphic designer Greer Allen is being celebrated in two ways this month at Yale -- in an exhibition at Yale and at a memorial in his honor.
Allen, who was University printer from 1971 to 1983 and senior critic in graphic design at the School of Art, died on April 21 after a brief illness.
The exhibition, titled "Green Allen: A Celebration of His Life and Work," is on view through Monday, Oct. 31, in the Arts of the Book Room at Sterling Library, 120 Wall St. The exhibit showcases a selection of books, posters and other works designed by Allen. Highlights include publications for campus institutions such as the Yale Center for British Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, as well as work for other institutions. Exhibition hours are 1-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday; it is also open by appointment by emailing jae.rossman@yale.edu or calling (203) 432-1712.
There will a gathering of friends in honor of Allen at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Law School's Levinson Auditorium, 127 Wall St. A reception will follow at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, 121 Wall St.
Contributions in Allen's honor may be sent to the Greer Allen Memorial, Yale Center for British Art, P.O. Box 208280, New Haven, CT 06520-8280. Checks should be made payable to Yale University.
