Experts to address global warming at conference

The Yale Center for the Study of Globalization will host a conference on global climate change which will bring to campus some of the most renowned experts on the topic.

"Global Warming: Looking Beyond Kyoto" will take place on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22, in Luce Hall auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Sessions will run 8:30 a.m.-5:45 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sunday. The event is free and open to the public.

Conference participants will reexamine the scientific evidence about global warming, identify key vulnerabilities and discuss policies for advancing the international efforts to mitigate climate change, taking into account recent political developments and the Kyoto Protocol in its current form. Participants have been asked to make concrete proposals for improvements in climate policy during the second commitment period and beyond.

Topics will include key vulnerabilities to climate change, climate policy options in industrialized countries, the links between climate change control and economic development, the emissions trading system, alternative climate policy options, policy options for curbing greenhouse gas emissions and improving development in the developing world, and improving energy efficiencies.

The conference participants include individuals from Russia, Brazil, China, Argentina, India, the European Union, the United States and Nigeria. Among the speakers will be Rajendra K. Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Howard Dalton, chief scientific adviser to the United Kingdom's Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs; Shen Longhai of the China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation; Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research; Cynthia Rosenzweig from NASA; and Stephen Schneider, director of the Center for Environmental Science and Policy at Stanford University.

The Yale Center for the Study of Globalization is devoted to examining the impact of the increasingly integrated world on individuals, communities and nations. For more information on the conference, contact the center at (203) 432-1900 or visit the website at www.ycsg.yale.edu.
