Panel to focus on debate over career vs. motherhood
The Women Faculty Forum will sponsor "What's the Purpose of a Yale Education? A Forum on Gender, Education and Career in Response to the NY Times" on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
The event will take place 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Rm. 211 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St. It is free and open to the public.
The idea for the forum was sparked by a story titled "Many Women at Elite Colleges Set Career Path to Motherhood," which appeared on page one of the Sept. 20 issue of The New York Times. The article alleged that a survey of women students in Ivy League institutions, including Yale, showed that a majority of them are planning to put their careers on hold to become stay-at-home moms.
The forum, say the organizers, will "address the accuracy of the article's conclusions. In addition to the 'truth of the trend,' we ask what beliefs and opinions are part of the decision of young, privileged and educated women to seemingly give up that privilege to be 'only' stay-at-home moms?" The speakers will also examine how today's young male students might rethink "traditional" family roles.
The participants will include Louise Story, the journalist who wrote The New York Times article; Peter Salovey, dean of Yale College; Meg Urry, professor of physics and astronomy; Margaret Doherty, a junior in Yale College; and Nels Ylitola, a student at the Law School.
