Ed McCarthy

Like father, like son: Yale tackle
named NFF Scholar-Athlete

Yale right tackle Ed McCarthy '07 has been named to the National Football Foundation (NFF) and Hall of Fame 2006 Scholar-Athlete Team.

McCarthy, of Fairfield, Connecticut, is the seventh Bulldog to earn this award since 1967, the year his father, Rick McCarthy '68, was named to the team. They are the only father and son from the same school to earn this award. The Yale senior's uncle, Ed McCarthy '65, also played for the Bulldogs.

McCarthy, who helped the Elis win five of their first six games this fall, was Yale's offensive line MVP eight times last year and has already taken the honors five times in six games in 2006.

The 2003 Ivy Rookie of the Year as an offensive guard (the only lineman in league history to win that distinction) and a second-team all-league center in 2004, McCarthy was first-team All-Ivy at left tackle last fall. He is a pre-season All-America pick who has been looked at by pro scouts this fall. The current Yale star was 2005 Academic All-Ivy pick.

The NFF class of 2006 was nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, and are all seniors or graduate students in their final year of eligibility who have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. They must also have outstanding football ability and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The winners -- who are selected by the NFF Awards Committee, comprised of former coaches, Hall of Famers and college administrators -- will receive an $18,000 scholarship for their postgraduate studies.

According to NFF President Steven J. Hatchell: "They have set the standard for their teammates and for all who play sports. By highlighting their achievements, we hope to inspire future generations of student-athletes to higher levels of achievement in all aspects of their lives."

The 17 award recipients will be honored at the 49th NFF Awards Dinner on Dec. 5 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. There, one of the 17 will be announced as the recipient of the 2006 Draddy Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the best scholar-athlete in the nation.
