Betty Trachtenberg

Trachtenberg to step down at year's end

Betty Trachtenberg, dean of student affairs and associate dean of Yale College, will be stepping down at the end of the current academic year, announced Yale College Dean Peter Salovey.

"Few people in the history of the Yale College Dean's Office have had such a broad and profound effect on the life of the entire community as Dean Trachtenberg," said Salovey in a letter to the Yale community. He noted that, during her time on campus, Trachtenberg "has worked with five deans of Yale College, dozens of other deans and masters, hundreds of student leaders, thousands of freshman counselors, and tens of thousands of Yale undergraduates."

Trachtenberg began her employment at Yale in the Summer Term (now Summer Session) Office, moving on to the Undergraduate Admissions Office and rising to the position of associate director. She was the first director of admissions for what is now the Eli Whitney Students Program, aimed at students of non-traditional age or background.

During his term as Yale College dean, Howard Lamar asked her to become director of freshman affairs, with a special mission to oversee the freshman counselor program and orientation programs for all new students -- a role she relinquished only last year. She was dubbed the "Landlady of the Old Campus" for the attention she paid to every aspect of freshman residential life, from public safety to the condition of the plumbing, noted Salovey.

As Yale College dean, Sidney Altman promoted her to the role of associate dean of Yale College and dean of student affairs and added all of undergraduate student affairs to her portfolio. Trachtenberg reorganized the oversight of hundreds of student groups and involved herself personally in setting and enforcing policies concerning student health and social conduct.

She has had particular responsibility for the Women's Center and the cultural centers for students of color. Throughout her deanship, she has worked closely with the Yale College Council and has championed student participation in the governance of the University. She also served as the Dean's Office representative for disciplinary, mediation and grievance procedures.

"But beyond all her duties, perhaps what is most important to acknowledge is that it is to Betty Trachtenberg that students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff colleagues, and deans and presidents inevitably turn in times of crisis," noted Salovey. "Whether after international disasters such as 9/11, or after personal tragedies, 'Betty T' is always at the forefront of efforts to understand the situation and to help the suffering heal."

Salovey concluded: "It is impossible to describe all of Dean Trachtenberg's achievements and qualities in a single message. Her departure from office marks the end of an era, but fortunately that era is not over quite yet. We will have the benefit and immense pleasure of her presence for a while still, and I know that these coming months will give us fresh reasons to be grateful to her."
