School of Music announces two
senior administrative appointments

Dean Robert Blocker has announced two senior appointments to the administration of the School of Music.

Thomas G. Masse, who has served for six years as associate dean for admissions and student affairs, has been promoted to deputy dean, and Michael C. Yaffe, executive director of The Hartt School at the University of Hartford, has been appointed associate dean for administrative affairs.

"These appointments to leadership roles will be most significant as we plan for the school's future, implement those plans and position the school as one of the finest professional music schools in the world," said Blocker.

Thomas Masse

Masse will oversee the school's academic programs; the management of the chamber music, Philharmonia and Yale Opera programs; and the operations of the admissions and registrar's offices. He will also continue in his leadership of student life at the school.

"Tom Masse is admired and respected by students, faculty and staff," said Blocker. "He brings the multi-faceted dimensions of administrator, teacher and artist to his new responsibilities, and we are extremely fortunate to have him as our deputy dean during this transformative time in the life of the School of Music."

A clarinetist, Masse has performed across the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Asia. He holds a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, as well as the first Artist Diploma awarded to a clarinetist at Yale. While a student at Yale, he was a winner of the Woolsey Hall Competition. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, where he was a Regents Fellow, and is completing an M.B.A. in finance at the University of Connecticut.

In addition to Yale, he has taught at the Universities of Michigan and Northern Colorado, and he has presented masterclasses throughout the world. At Yale, he coaches chamber music.

Masse is the editor of the critical edition of Charles Ives's "Largo" for violin, clarinet and piano, an edition that is used by performers throughout the world. An outspoken advocate for the arts in American society, Masse has served as an adviser for arts organizations at the local, state and national levels.

Michael Yaffe

Yaffe's duties will include financial management, facilities and human resources. He will also oversee the School of Music's expanding educational outreach program.

"Michael Yaffe's breadth of experience in music education, outreach programs and facility renovation is a valuable asset to the school, for his leadership will be utilized in each of these areas," said Blocker.

Formerly assistant director for operations at the National Association of Schools of Music, Yaffe had served as executive director of the Hartt School since 1986. There he developed one of the most highly praised community programs in the nation, moving the enterprise from a referral organization to a 2700+ comprehensive community arts school. His "College Financial Analysis" model is well known in the field. Currently, he is chair of the Accrediting Commission of Community and Performing Arts Schools, vice president of the board of directors for the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts and a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra's board of directors.
