Guests at a performance by the Saybrook College Orchestra (SYO) on Thursday, Dec. 14, will have the opportunity to enjoy symphony music while also helping out needy citizens in the New Haven area.
The event, the SYO's third annual educational concert, will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. There is no admission fee, but the orchestra is asking audience members to bring one can of food each to the performance as part of a drive for the community food pantry.
More than 2,000 Connecticut students, including many students from the New Haven Public Schools, are expected to attend the concert, which will showcase the kaleidoscopic sounds of the full symphony orchestra. Musical selections include John Williams' "Raiders March" (from "Raiders of the Lost Ark") and "Theme from Superman," and Ottorino Respighi's "Pines of Rome."
Founded in 2001, the SYO currently comprises over 80 musicians from the Yale community, including undergraduates, graduate students and university faculty members. Organized entirely by undergraduates, the SYO is committed to education and community outreach. More than 1,500 students participated in one of the orchestra's educational programs in 2005-06.
The educational concert will be conducted by Steven Thomas, music director of SYO and principal cellist for both the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra New England. In addition, Thomas currently works with the orchestral program at the Hartt School of Music. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Music.
The concert is open to the public. For more information, visit the SYO website at www.yale.edu/syorchestra or contact Casey Perley at (716) 574-6311 or casey.perley@yale.edu.
