Dr. John A. Elefteriades



Elefteriades is named as Glenn Professor

Dr. John A. Elefteriades, recently designated as the William W.L. Glenn Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, is an internationally known aortic surgeon and is chief of the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine.

Elefteriades also serves as program director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. In his clinical practice, he specializes in heart surgery, aneurysms, thoracic surgery and heart transplantation. His research focuses on aneurysms, diseases of the thoracic aorta, advanced left ventricular failure and transplantation.

Elefteriades earned his B.A. from Yale in 1972 and his M.D. from the Yale School of Medicine in 1976. He has spent his entire professional career in New Haven since completing residencies in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He joined the Yale faculty in 1980 as an instructor in surgery and was promoted to professor of surgery in 1993. He has also held positions as chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the West Haven Veterans Administration Medical Center (1984-1986), director of surgical electrophysiology and mechanical devices at the School of Medicine (1991-1995) and director of adult cardiac procedures at the School of Medicine (1991-1995).

A lifetime member of the National Registry of Who's Who since 1999, Elefteriades has been honored with numerous citations as one of the best heart surgeons in the Northeast and in the country. These include his selection, often in repeated years, for the following: "The Best Doctors in New York: New York Metro Area"; "America's Top Doctors: New York Metro Area"; New York magazine's listing of "New York's Top 100 Minimally Invasive Surgeons"; "Best Doctors in America"; and as New York magazine's "Top Doctor in Thoracic Surgery (New York area)." In 2004, Good Housekeeping magazine named him the top doctor in its "44 Top Cardiac Centers for Women."

The heart surgeon's other honors include the Walter Bleifeld Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions in Clinical Research in Cardiology and the Professor John B. Chang Research Achievement Award, among others. He is the president of the International College of Angiology.

Elefteriades has held visiting professorships at numerous universities around the world, including the University of Athens, the Nassar Institute in Egypt, the University of Wales and the Juntendo University School of Medicine in Japan.
