Yale Journalism Initiative to provide
support for summer work

The Yale Journalism Initiative will now provide career counseling and financial support for students interested in working at newspapers and magazines during the summer.

These internships are considered important opportunities for students to develop their journalism skills in real-world settings, which can enhance both their readiness and their eagerness to pursue careers in journalism.

To help students find and prepare for these internships, the Journalism Initiative has hired Mark Oppenheimer as coordinator. Oppenheimer is the former editor of the New Haven Advocate and a contributor to The New York Times, The American Scholar and Slate. A 1996 graduate of Yale College, Oppenheimer received his Ph.D. from Yale in American religion in 2003. He is author of two books: "Knocking on Heaven's Door: American Religion in the Age of Counterculture" and "Thirteen and a Day: The Bar and Bat Mitzvah Across America."

The Yale Journalism Initiative was launched in 2006 with a grant from Yale alumni Steven Brill, the founder of The American Lawyer magazine and Court TV, and his wife, Cynthia Margolin Brill. The initiative's mission is to lead more Yale students to choose journalism as a career by providing them with enhanced opportunities to learn about and practice journalism -- thereby ensuring a vibrant, independent press in America.

This semester, Jill Abramson, managing editor of The New York Times, is teaching the advanced journalism seminar at Yale. The course is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in print journalism and, along with a seminar offered in the fall, is a core requirement for participation in the Yale Journalism Initiative.

Many of the country's most renowned journalists are Yale graduates, including Bob Woodward, Jeff Greenfield, former Harper's editor Lewis Lapham, National Review founder William F. Buckley, Slate editor Jacob Weisberg, Pulitzer Prize winner Samantha Power and Wall Street Journal managing editor Paul Steiger. The Yale Journalism Initiative is designed to help current Yale students continue this tradition.

Editors wishing to hire Yale students as summer interns or reporters should contact Oppenheimer at mark.oppenheimer@yale.edu.
