Drug company Marinus is focus of seminar
The Yale BioHaven Entrepreneurship Seminars series continues its spring schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 7, with a program on Marinus Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Marinus), a new specialty pharmaceutical company dedicated to the development and commercialization of novel drugs to treat serious neurological, psychiatric and pain disorders. The program will be held 4-5 p.m. in the Anlyan Center auditorium, 300 Cedar St. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments and networking will follow the seminar 5-6 p.m. Speakers are Harry H. Penner Jr., chair and chief executive officer of Marinus, and Vincent Pieribone, the company's founding discovery officer, who is also an associate professor of physiology at Yale. A primary focus of their presentation will be the company's formation. Marinus is developing Ganaxolone for the treatment of epilepsy. Utilizing proprietary technologies, Marinus successfully reformulated this promising new drug, and Phase IIb clinical trials are expected to begin soon. Marinus has licensed another compound, Chelerythrine, from Yale, and it is in pre-clinical development to target both the treatment of bipolar disorder and the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia. Marinus has received funding from the Epilepsy Project, Stanley Medical Research Foundation, Connecticut Innovations and the National Institutes of Health. In October 2005, the company announced the closing of a $29.4 million Series A financing round led by venture funding and private investors. Registration is free, but those interested must R.S.V.P. in advance to Larry Banks at larry.banks@yale.edu or the Yale Office of Cooperative Research at (203) 436-8096. Directions to the event are available online at http://info.med.yale.edu/maps/cab.html. Yale BioHaven Entrepreneurship Seminars are sponsored by the Yale Office of Cooperative Research and Connecticut United for Research Excellence, and jointly promoted by the Yale Entrepreneurial Society and the Yale Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Society.
