Levin announces new departmental chairs
President Richard C. Levin has announced the following faculty appointments: Laura Engelstein, the Henry S. McNeil Professor of Russian History, as chair of the Department of History, and Stephen Morse, the Dudley Professor of Engineering, as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Both terms will be for a period of three years, effective July 1.
The website of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, at www.yaleruddcenter.org, has been selected for inclusion in Dorland's Healthcare Website Guide.
This independent directory service searches the Internet for top sources of information on prevalent diseases and conditions. An expert advisory board then rates websites for the quality of their content and their usefulness for patients and health care professionals. Websites that receive the highest scores from the advisory board appear in the guide.
Unlike directories that solicit funds from the organizations they list, Dorland's is an objective source supported by subscribers. It is intended for use by consumers and healthcare professionals as a map to the best resources on the World Wide Web.
Annette Molinaro, assistant professor in the division of biostatistics at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, has been elected a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI).
The ISI, established in 1885, is one of the oldest international scientific associations active today. The institute is an autonomous society which seeks to develop and improve statistical methods and their application through the promotion of international activities and cooperation. It is composed of approximately 2,000 elected members from more than 133 countries.
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) has named the 1992 book, "Effective Care of the Newborn Infant," edited by Michael B. Bracken, the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology, professor of neurology and of obstetrics and gynecology, and Dr. Jack Sinclair, one of the landmark publications that have influenced how the medical community views evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based medicine has been named as one of the 15 most important medical milestones since 1840.
Bracken's primary research interest is the epidemiology of diseases of pregnancy and newborns, emphasizing environmental and genetic risks for causation and iatrogenic factors in patient care. He is the co-director of the Yale Center for Perinatal, Pediatric and Environmental Epidemiology.
