"FireWife: A Story of Fire and Water"
is a new novel by graduate student
Tinling Choong.

Yale Books in Brief

The following is a list of books recently or soon-to-be published by members of the Yale community. Descriptions are based on material provided by the publishers.

FireWife: A Story of Fire and Water
Tinling Choong, Ph.D. candidate in East Asian languages and literatures
(Nan A. Talese/Doubleday)

In "FireWife," Tinling Choong draws on the ancient creation legend of Nuwa and the battle between fire and water to tell a modern story of how women are connected throughout time. Nin, a 31-year-old photographer, leaves her corporate job in California and embarks on a journey to create an eponymous photo essay of Asian women around the world. Spurred by a lifetime of guilt for the accidental death of her younger sister, Nin dedicates herself to a search for the truth about women: the women of fire and the women of water, who have been marginalized because of their sexuality. Interwoven with Nin's story are vignettes of each of the young women whom she spontaneously photographs.

Kenneth Burke on Shakespeare
Edited by Scott L. Newstok, the Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow in Special Collections at the Yale University Library
(Parlor Press )

This volume gathers and annotates all of the Shakespeare criticism, including previously unpublished lectures and notes, by American intellectual Kenneth Burke. Burke's interpretations of Shakespeare have had an impact on generations of readers, both within and outside of academia, including playwrights and directors. Read together, Burke's pieces form an evolving argument about the nature of Shakespeare's artistry. Included are 13 analyses of individual plays and poems, an introductory lecture explaining his approach to reading Shakespeare and a comprehensive appendix of scores of Burke's other references to the playwright. As editor, Scott Newstok also provides a historical introduction examining Burke's legacy, an account shaped in part by manuscripts and correspondence held by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. This edition fulfills Burke's own vision of collecting in one volume his Shakespeare criticism, portions of which had appeared throughout his lengthy career.

Extreme Prematurity: Practices, Bioethics and the Law
Dr. Geoffrey Miller, professor of pediatrics and neurology
(Cambridge University Press )

This hardcover textbook examines the controversial issues surrounding the clinical management of this group of neonates by the intervention of modern neonatal intensive care. The foregoing of life-sustaining treatment is of particular importance. According to Miller, the topic of extreme prematurity is relevant due to the rise in multiple and preterm births due to the increase in women who are undergoing assisted reproductive procedures and the large increase in premature labor. Miller's book is divided into four sections. The first section is a monograph covering the epidemiology and practices in different parts of the world. The second examines the bioethics considerations, including ethical theories, moral principles and quality-of-life issues. The third section explores national and international guidelines, and the last covers medical law aspects in the United States and around the world. "My goal was to present the variability in practice, the impossible complex bioethics and to present how the law differs around the world and within the United States," says Miller of the book.
