Homage to director Rossellini will
highlight program on Italian cinema

"Italian Cinema for the New Millennium: Cinema as Witness," a program that integrates a film festival, a graduate conference and a faculty symposium, will take place at Yale Thursday-Sunday, April 19-22.

The event, being presented for the second consecutive year, is sponsored by Yale's Department of Italian Language and Literature in conjunction with the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, the Whitney Humanities Center and the Office of Public Affairs.

All events will take place at the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. They are free and open to the public.

Film festival

The film festival will begin on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. with the screening of "Perlasca: The Courage of a Just Man," by Alberto Negrin, about an Italian businessman who masqueraded as a Spanish diplomat at the end of World War II, successfully saving 5,200 Hungarian Jews from deportation to Auschwitz.

The program will continue on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. screening of "Good Morning Night," by Marco Bellocchio, about the seizure and murder of Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades in 1978.

The U.S. premiere of Emanuele Crialese's "Nuovomondo" ("The Golden Door") will take place on Saturday. There will be two screenings, at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., with an introduction by Anthony Riccio, author of "The Italian-American Experience in New Haven." Set in the early 1900s, during the great wave of Italian immigration to the United States, the film tells the story of a poor immigrant farmer who uproots his family from Sicily in the hopes of harvesting the American dream. The film is being presented courtesy of Miramax.

All films will be shown in Italian with English subtitles in the auditorium.

Faculty symposium

The late director Roberto Rossellini's daughter and son will be among the featured speakers at the faculty symposium titled "Homage to Rossellini," which will be held Friday and Saturday in Rm. 208 of the center.

The program will open with a keynote address by Professor Giuseppe Mazzotta of Yale at 2 p.m. on Friday. Following a panel titled "Rossellini: Before and After" at 3 p.m., Ingrid Rossellini and her brother, Renzo, will take part in a session titled "Rossellini: Reflections, Personal and Professional" at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, there will be two panels: "Rossellini: Transitions" at 9 a.m. and "Rossellini: From Fiction to Documentary" at 10:30 a.m.

Graduate symposium

"Cinema as Witness" will be the theme of the graduate symposium, taking place on Saturday and Sunday in Rm. 208 of the center.

Saturday's program will begin at 2 p.m. with a keynote address by Francesco Casetti of the Università Cattolica di Milano. This will be followed by a panel titled "The Legacy in the Making" at 3:15 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be panels on "The Legacy in Action" at 9 a.m. and "The Legacy at Large" at 10:45 a.m. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion at noon.
