International conference will examine contemporary Taiwan and its legacy
An international conference titled "Taiwan and Its Contexts" will be held at Yale Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28, at Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave.
The goal of the conference is to shed new light on the current situation in Taiwan, as well as its cultural legacy within the greater China region.
The organizers write: "The question of cultural communication has become increasingly important in global contexts, and translating Taiwan inevitably involves problems of 'difference' and 'similarity.' Thus, there are plans to combine discussions of traditional Chinese culture with those of contemporary Taiwanese phenomena, in an attempt to find new ways of reading Taiwan as we enlarge our perspectives."
The event will bring participants from a wide variety of disciplines and from far-flung geographical locations to look at Taiwan in its wide-ranging contexts. Topics to be explored include Taiwan's politics, economics, society, history and memories, cultural and counter-culture, literature and arts, and intellectual dynamics. A complete schedule of events is available at http://research.yale.edu/eastasianstudies/taiwanprogram.pdf.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Council on East Asian Studies, part of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale; the Department of Foreign Languages at National Tsinghua University in Taiwan; and the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Harvard University.
This conference has received support from the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale and the C.C.K. Foundation for Inter-University Center for Sinology.
