Members of Yale's Pediatric Asthma Care Team will provide free screenings for the community 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, April 28, in the School of Medicine's Brady Auditorium, 310 Cedar St.
Yale physicians and nurses will distribute the Asthma Control Test to assess asthma control, measure lung function and provide information about asthma, a chronic lung disease that has become a major health issue in Connecticut and across the nation. It is the leading cause of missed school days, emergency room visits for chronic illness and admission to the hospital. About 5,000 people die from asthma attacks each year.
In Connecticut, about 202,000 adults and 75,000 children under the age of 18 have asthma. Annually, about 1,400 children under the age of 15 are admitted to the hospital, and 6,000 children are seen in the emergency room because of asthma attacks.
Recent surveys show that many people with asthma are not properly diagnosed and/or adequately treated for their disease.
Tina Tolomeo, nurse practitioner, and Patty Goncalves, nurse coordinator in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Respiratory Medicine, coordinated the event, which is being held in honor of World Asthma Day (May 1).
Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Tolomeo at (203) 785-2480.
