Teams of volunteers campuswide will wield paintbrushes, clear trails, assemble crafts kits and help distribute books to city youngsters, among other tasks, while working on behalf of New Haven organizations during the fourth annual Yale Community Service Day on Saturday, April 28.
Students, staff and faculty are invited to take part in the program, which aims not only to support the efforts of non-profit groups in the city, but to promote a spirit of service within the University community.
"By mobilizing teams from Yale around specific, one-day service projects, we hope to lay the foundation for continued, committed interaction between all those that call New Haven home, whether for four years or permanently," write the organizers of this year's event, Larry Wise '08 and Bridget Deiters '07, former representatives on the Yale College Council. The undergraduate organization is co-sponsoring the event with Locals 34 and 35, the United Way of Greater New Haven, Yale's Office of New Haven and State Affairs and Campus Development, the Office of Finance and Administration and the McDougal Graduate Student Center.
Teams of 15-20 students, faculty, staff and other volunteers will participate in a variety of projects at local charities and organizations throughout New Haven, including the New Haven Boys & Girls Club, New Haven Reads book bank, East Rock State Park, LEAP, the Eli Whitney Museum and the YMCA. For most of the assignments, volunteers need to bring only their enthusiasm and willingness to work. However, for one project this year --converting English to Braille at the Connecticut Children's Museum -- volunteers will need to bring a laptop.
The day will begin at 9 a.m., when volunteers will gather for breakfast at the McDougal Center, 320 York St. Buses will transport the teams to the community service locations, and return them to campus at 1 p.m.

"Volunteering with a team from Yale will be a great way to get to know and enjoy colleagues and students, while making a positive difference in the community," says Shauna King, vice president for finance and administration.
"Service to society is one of Yale's most cherished values," she adds. "I look forward to seeing many members of the Yale community working together on April 28th."
