Two accomplished women -- one, the former head of a nation and the other, a top executive at an institute that trains executives worldwide -- will speak about the importance of developing future female leaders at a program taking place 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, in Rm. 114 of Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, 1 Prospect St.
Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, and Maryann Billington, senior vice president for the Professional Development Group at Lore International Institute, will present the keynote addresses at the event. Professor Judith Resnik, co-chair of the Yale Women Faculty Forum, will also speak.
The program is sponsored by the Women's Leadership Initiative, a new undergraduate organization that seeks to create a campus culture that encourages and empowers aspiring female leaders. The group is working to achieve this goal both by building a community in which women support each other's endeavors through mentorships and other activities, and by presenting talks by speakers who model the ethic of strong, assertive women.
Robinson will discuss the important role that women leaders, in particular, can play in addressing the challenges of the 21st century. In her talk, she will draw on her own experience as the first female president of Ireland (1990-1997) and the high commissioner for human rights at the United Nations (1997-2002), as well as her current work as founder and director of the Ethical Globalization Initiative, an organization dedicated to integrating human rights standards into corporate governance and policymaking.
Billington, who has over 30 years' experience in business, corporate learning and education, will talk about her work at the Lore International Institute with leading business women around the world. The company has collected data from over 450,000 professionals worldwide. Billington will discuss what the company's research reveals about women in leadership and how they influence others, as well as predictors for success and how to evaluate one's own career.
Resnik, the Arthur Liman Professor of Law, will speak about the impact of gender, both locally and globally, and transnational efforts to bring about equality.
The event is free and open to all members of the Yale community; those interested in attending should R.S.V.P. to launch.event@gmail.com. The program is funded by the Yale College Council and the Council for Campus-wide Activities.
