Members of the Yale community no longer need to spend time waiting for a bus, thanks to a new service just introduced by Yale Shuttle Services, part of the Parking and Transportation Department.
A new enhancement to Yale's Shuttle website allows Yale community members to view shuttles in "real-time" from their desktop computer, Web-enabled phone or PDA by visiting the website at www.yale.edu/shuttle/locator. The site allows users to view all regular shuttle routes, or choose to display only the route in which they are interested.
The new system animates buses in motion against a detailed map of the Yale campus to show exactly where a shuttle bus is located at any given time. This allows Yale community members to leave their offices, classrooms or dormitories "just in time" to catch a ride to their next campus destination.
In addition, Yale Shuttle Services has expanded its evening Blue Line service to New Haven's Union Station. The service will now run a regular route between campus and the train station at 15 minute intervals 6 p.m.-1 a.m. seven days a week. To view the schedule stops, visit www.yale.edu/shuttle/night.
As part of Yale's sustainability initiative, all shuttle routes are now powered by a bio-diesel blend and are equipped with special filters to reduce emissions.
It is hoped that these improvements will encourage use of Yale's shuttle and decrease the use of single occupancy vehicles downtown.
Yale community members are encouraged to submit their ideas about ways to improve the shuttle service by sending an e-mail to yale.transit@yale.edu.
