Peabody events

The Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave., will present a plant sale and a seminar on plants that attract butterflies on Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Items offered for sale will include annuals, perennials and shrubs, including many native and non-native, non-invasive varieties that provide nectar for adult butterflies, food for butterfly larvae, and seeds and berries for birds. Each plant will have a label with culture information, and fact sheets will be provided with information on designing a proper habitat. Experts will be available to answer questions. Planting projects and other gardening activities for children will be offered.

At 11 a.m. in the Peabody auditorium, Andy Brand of Broken Arrow Nursery will present a seminar, "Plants That Attract Butterflies and Their Caterpillars," with information on designing a proper habitat for local butterflies and caterpillars.

Admission to the sale is free. Indoor events are free with museum admission. Admission is $7 for adults; $6 for seniors 65 and over; $5 for children ages 3-18 and students with I.D. All proceeds from the sale will benefit educational programming for area students.


Open Studios at School of Art

The School of Art will host Open Studios noon-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 13.

The event will feature projects of M.F.A. students in the departments of painting, sculpture, graphic design and photography. The graphic design thesis show will occupy the Green Hall gallery, 1156 Chapel St. Studios for students in photography will be held throughout the ground floor of Green Hall. Students in painting/printmaking will exhibit their work at 353 Crown St. Studios for sculpture students will be held in Hammond Hall, 14 Mansfield St.

A shuttle bus from the New Haven train station to Green and Hammond halls will be available free of charge from 11:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Art Place exhibit

The Yale Medical Group's Art Place XIII exhibit will open with a reception on Wednesday, May 16, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the first floor of the Yale Physicians Building (YPB), 800 Howard Ave.

Eleven New Haven area artists will display paintings, pastels, drawings, photographs, prints and sculptures. The artworks will remain on display through October. Exhibition hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A reading by poets published in the journal Caduceus will be held 6-8 p.m. to coincide with the Art Place opening. Contributors to the journal include Susan Walker, Alabama's poet laureate, and Maxine Kumin, the former poet laureate of the United States.

Art Place is a program sponsored by the Yale Medical Group to use art to enhance the medical environment for patients, staff and visitors to the YPB.


Child Conduct Clinic

The Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic offers instruction to help develop effective ways of handling the challenges of parenting. Activities covered include bathing, dressing, cleaning and homework. For more information, call (203) 432-9993.
