CCL renovations on schedule; lawn to be used for Commencement
The renovation of the Cross Campus Library (CCL) and basement of Sterling Memorial Library (SML) is on schedule for reopening in time for the start of the fall semester in September, and the Cross Campus lawn area will be ready for use during this year's Commencement activities.
By late May, the heavy equipment, construction walls and contractors' trailers will be gone and replaced with landscaping, benches, lighting and grass. Maya Lin's "Women's Table" sculpture will also be on view by this time.
After Yale Reunion weekends, some walkway barriers (along High Street in front of SML and between Harkness Hall and Berkeley College) will be re-installed for pedestrian safety, as truck traffic will continue at a steady pace this summer -- both underground as part of the library renovation and above ground to finish the new outside portico entrance into the new CCL (between Berkeley College and Harkness Hall). Preparations for the reopening, as well as the final moves of Circulation and Reserves staff, services and CCL collection, will occur in late August.
By September, the goals for upgrading CCL's infrastructure and for improving its learning spaces will be met with the completed installations of new mechanical, electrical, environmental and telecommunications systems.
In addition, new electronic classrooms (with plasma screens and computer equipment), 14 new group study rooms, 44 upgraded individualized study rooms and an informal study lounge with cafe services will be available for readers this fall. Faculty and students will be able to connect to wireless network access, data and power outlets throughout the library.
Faculty and students also will be able to explore with librarians, curators and other experts from around campus various pedagogical techniques, instructional technologies and library resources at a new Collaborative Learning Center. This will complement the return of the much-used CCL Computing Cluster workstations, the Technology Troubleshooting Services and the Self-Service Multi-Media stations by Information Technology Services.
