Pastors from around the country are expected to participate in a May 17-19 conference at Yale Divinity School aimed at honing pastoral leadership skills.
Sponsored by the Yale Center for Faith and Culture, the conference will feature two keynote addresses, small workshop discussion, and music by the Los Angeles-based acoustic band Zehnder and renowned Chicago-based jazz pianist Willie Pickens.
There will be two keynote speakers: Craig Dykstra, vice president for religion at the Lilly Endowment, which is supporting the event, and Miroslav Volf, director of the Center for Faith & Culture and a prolific writer whose most recent book is "The End of Memory: Remembering Rightly in a Violent World" (Eerdmans 2006).
The conference will open at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, with a talk by Volf titled "The Church's Great Malfunctions." Following the lecture, evening worship with Zehnder will be conducted at 9 p.m. in Marquand Chapel.
Dykstra will speak at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 18, on the subject "The Pastoral Imagination." During the afternoon, there will be a series of workshops on subjects such as "Hip-Hop(e), Youth and Faith: Sacred Tunes and Spirited Voices," "Hot Off the Press: Engaging the Front Page with Faith," "Faith and Politics: 2008 and Beyond" and "Faith, War and the Muslim Other: Reconciliation Work." The day will conclude with an evening concert featuring Zehnder and Pickens at 8:30 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets.
On the morning of Saturday, May 19, additional workshops are scheduled, concluding with an 11 a.m. worship service with Zehnder.
All events are free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged but not required. With the exception of the May 18 concert in Battell Chapel, all sessions will be held at Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, 409 Prospect St. A conference brochure and registration form are available on the web at www.yale.edu/faith/fwl/pastoral.htm.
