Yale has highest number of sports teams honored by NCAA for academic progress

Yale had 28 teams honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards for high Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores Thursday -- four more than any other school in the country.

A total of 839 teams across 217 Division I colleges and universities were honored with the awards, which are given to those teams whose multi-year APR scores are in the top 10% of all squads in their respective sports.

The Bulldogs have a history of faring well in APR scores. Last year, 26 of the 29 Yale teams that were eligible to be rated were in the top 10%, more than any other school in the country.

The Ivy League was the Division I conference with the largest number of high-performing squads, with 152 teams receiving awards. Yale (28 teams) was followed by Brown and Dartmouth (24), Harvard (21), Princeton (19), Penn (15), Cornell (12) and Columbia (9). The league average of 19 teams per school was nearly double the next best conference average (11.5).

The APR measures semester-by-semester progress toward graduation of every individual team in Division I and includes eligibility, retention and graduation as factors. The APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic-eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team's APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time divided by the total points possible. The APR is a multi-year rate for enrollment throughout the 2003-2004, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years.

Yale's Public Recognition Award recipients were: men's baseball, men's basketball, men's cross-country, men's fencing, men's football, men's golf, men's ice hockey, men's indoor track, men's lacrosse, men's outdoor track, men's soccer, men's swimming, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's crew, women's cross-country, women's fencing, women's field hockey, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's ice hockey, women's indoor track, women's outdoor track, women's soccer, women's softball, women's swimming, women's tennis and women's volleyball.

(Note: heavyweight crew, lightweight crew, sailing, women's sailing, men's squash and women's squash are not included in the NCAA's APR ratings.)
