Mary Amendola, a staff specialist at the Customer Service Center, stands beneath her chosen "sky-scape."

Adding some sunshine to a windowless office

A windowless office has been transformed into a room with a view -- actually several views -- thanks to the efforts of two Yale managers.

The space in question is the Customer Service Center of the Yale School of Medicine's Facilities Department, located in the Laboratory for Epidemiology and Public Health at 60 College St.

Determined to make the workplace a more pleasing environment, Carlos Mercado and Lorraine F. Roseman -- respectively associate director and operations manager/customer advocate -- decided to involve their staff members in the process.

The staff specialists (as they are known) were invited to choose a "sky-scape" that would be hung directly above their desks. The choices included scenes featuring sun-lit clouds, butterflies, palm trees and Air Force jets. In addition, the room was painted sky-blue.

"We invite anyone to come visit our site to see what can be done to make a work environment a more pleasing, enjoyable space for our valued staff and how we incorporated them in the process to make this a success," says Roseman. "We will be happy to share the information on how these sky-scapes can be purchased for other sites." Roseman can be reached at (203) 785-6763.
