Dr. John A. Persing

John A. Persing named to Polayes Professorship

Dr. John A. Persing, newly appointed as the Irving and Silik Polayes Professor of Plastic Surgery, specializes in craniofacial surgery, with a particular interest in craniosynostosis, the premature fusing of cranial sutures, which often results in abnormal brain and skull growth.

With colleagues, Persing has studied the vault suture as the probable primary site of pathology in skull maldevelopment in craniosynostosis. He and his colleagues have also demonstrated that maldevelopment of the cranial base may occur secondary to primary vault suture growth abnormalities in certain forms of craniosynostosis.

In an effort to improve results following surgery for the condition, Persing helped develop the "Barrel Stave" osteotomy -- or "holistic" cranioplasty approach -- to the treatment of certain forms of craniosynostosis.

The Yale surgeon's clinical and research interests also include the treatment of craniofacial trauma, vascular malformations of the head and neck, cranial base tumors, and disorders of the brachial, lumbar plexuses and peripheral nerves. He studies the significance of facial and body shape deformities in the overall activities of patients afflicted by congenital deformity, facial and tumor abnormalities, as well as body-image and quality-of-life issues.

Persing joined the Yale faculty in 1992 as a professor of plastic surgery and neurosurgery, and as chief of the Section of Plastic Surgery at Yale and chief of plastic surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH). He previously taught at the University of Virginia, where he served as vice chair of the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, chief of the Division of Craniofacial Surgery and director of cranial base surgery.

A graduate of the University of Vermont, where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees, Persing undertook general surgery residency at the University of Arizona and his neurosurgery residency at the University of Virginia.

Persing is co-editor of five books on cranial surgery and cosmetic plastic surgery.
In addition to performing surgeries at Y-NHH, Persing has also offered his surgical skills at no cost to poor citizens of Brazil, where he has treated children and adults with cleft palates, burn damage and other defects. A medical consultant for ABC News, he is listed in "Best Doctors in America" and "Who's Who in the World," among other recognitions and honors.
