Peter Reinhardt, a nationally recognized leader in regulatory and environmental health and safety communities, has been appointed as director of Yale's Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS).
Reinhardt's appointment, which became effective on March 1, was the result of a nationwide search that followed the retirement of Elan Gandsman, who had been director of OEHS since 1993.
Reinhardt holds a B.S. in biochemistry and an M.A. in public policy and administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He began his career in the Safety Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1979, serving as the department's assistant safety director for chemical and environmental safety from 1991 to 2000.
In 2000, Reinhardt was recruited to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC), where he served as the director of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety until his move to Yale. While at UNC, he developed and implemented a comprehensive environmental health and safety strategic plan and management system, spearheaded numerous new safety and compliance initiatives, and led the UNC pandemic influenza planning effort. He has been recognized on the national front for his publications, lectures and contributions to deliberations regarding federal policy and guidance.
"Protecting the health and safety of the Yale community, our facilities and our environment is a matter of paramount importance to the University," said Provost Andrew Hamilton. "We are extremely fortunate to be able to rely upon the superb leadership of Peter Reinhardt and the talent and commitment of the staff of OEHS to assure we achieve that objective."
Hamilton added: "I would also like to take this opportunity to extend the University's gratitude to Rick Maffei, deputy director of security programs, for serving as interim director of OEHS with great dedication and skill during the search."
