Dr. Lockwood's latest honors include 'Pulitzer Prize of the business press'
Dr. Charles J. Lockwood, the Anita O' Keefe Young Professor of Women's Health and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at the Yale School of Medicine, has received numerous honors lately.
He has been named president of the Society for Gynecological Investigation (SGI) for the 2007-2008 term, was honored for his writing and was a featured speaker at the Annual Clinical Meeting of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
SGI is the world's leading research organization in reproductive sciences. Lockwood will preside over the 2008 annual meeting in San Diego with Yale obstetrics & gynecology professor Dr. Hugh Taylor, who will serve as program director of the meeting. Lockwood served as SGI president-elect 2006-2007 and was previously secretary treasurer for the society.
Considered the premier scientific organization in obstetrics and gynecology, SGI has about 1,000 members throughout the world. About one-third are basic scientists; the rest are clinical investigators. Research by SGI members is oriented toward the fields of obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology and reproductive medicine.
Lockwood also recently received the prestigious Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award for his editorials in Contemporary Ob/Gyn Magazine. Created in 1955 to recognize and reward excellence in independent business publications, the Neal Award is often hailed as the "Pulitzer Prize of the business press." Lockwood won the award in 2005 as well.
The Yale professor also delivered the March of Dimes Lecture at the 55th Annual Clinical Meeting of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists May 5-9. His talk, titled "The Risks of Venous Thrombosis and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes in Women with Inherited Thrombophilias," outlined the basic mechanics of hemostasis and the impact of pregnancy on the condition.
Lockwood is chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale-New Haven Hospital and is a member of the Yale Cancer Center. In addition to his research, teaching and administrative responsibilities, he maintains a busy faculty practice in high-risk obstetrics, providing consultations and performing ultrasounds, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and intrauterine transfusions. He has been cited on the "Best Doctors" list by American Health Magazine and has been annually cited as a "Best Doctor" by New York Magazine and the Castle and Connolly Survey since 1995.
Lockwood also chairs the Endowment Fund Committee of the American Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians Foundation. In this role, he selects and supports scholars who work in the lab for three years.
