Tommy Fund Family Day

The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer will hold its 13th annual Family Day at the Connecticut Tennis Center on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Participants can run a 5K road race, walk two miles or run in a 0.3 mile fun run for children under the age of 10.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The fee is $15; $8 for children under 10. Participants who raise $100 do not have to pay the fee and the first 800 to register will receive a shirt designed by a 10-year-old patient.

Other activities will include interactive science experiments and face-painting. Participants can have their blood pressure screened or get a chair massage.

The Tommy Fund seeks to increase participation and awareness to help children receiving cancer treatment at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and their families. For more information or a registration form, call (800) 974-5559 or visit www.tommyfund.org.

Library orientation

Manuscripts and Archives at the University Library will offer a general introduction to the department on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

The session, which is open to the public, will be of particular interest to new faculty, undergraduates beginning work on seminar papers and senior essays, and graduate students investigating topics for research utilizing the holdings of the department.

A major center for primary source research at Yale, Manuscripts and Archives is known for its collections on the University and New Haven, although the materials held by the department have a far broader sweep. They document a wide array of subject areas including public policy and administration; diplomacy and international affairs; political and social thought and commentary; and science, medicine and the environment.

The orientation will include information on searching the department's databases and finding aids. The session will take place in the Cowles Reference Center, SML 150, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, send e-mail to mssa.assist@yale.edu or call (203) 432-1744. Prior registration is encouraged but not required.

Marrow donors sought

The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is seeking volunteers to become marrow doners.

A Yale Drive will be held on the following days: Tuesday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the first floor of Kline Biology Tower, 219 Prospect St.; 3-6 p.m., behind the Yale Bookstore; and Wednesday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in Harkness Lounge, 367 Cedar St.

Volunteers who wish to join the NMDP registry must be between the ages of 18 and 60, meet the health guidelines, fill out a form, give a cheek cell swab and be willing to donate to any patient in need. Minority donors are especially needed. Patients are more likely to match donors of the same racial and ethnic heritage.

For more information, send e-mail to jason.ptacek@yale.edu.

Peabody field trips

The Peabody Museum of Natural History will sponsor two field trips in October.

Ted Elliman will lead a trip to Mt. Frissell in Salisbury on Sunday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The highest point in Connecticut, Mt. Frissell harbors an array of plant communities, including hardwood forest, hemlock ravines, ridge top oak forest and open balds.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, 1-3 p.m., Lauren Brown will lead a fall foliage trip to the Peabody Natural Area in Branford. The coastal property supports over 200 species of plants on 36 acres, including maidenhair fern and round-leaved dogwood.

The fee for the Mt. Frissell trip is $42 for museum members; $48 for nonmembers. The fee for the Branford trip is $20 for members; $23 for nonmembers. Registration is required for both events. For more information, call (203) 432-3775 or send e-mail to peabody.adultprograms@yale.edu.

Poster session

The Women Faculty Forum is accepting applications for its upcoming event, titled "Women, Gender and Yale: NOT Your Ordinary Poster Session!"

The poster session will be an outdoor display on the Beinecke Plaza showcasing the contributions Yale women make to their disciplines, to their departments and to the University. Submissions should include work done on or about women and gender.

The posters will be on display Oct. 10-12 outdoors in the Beinecke/Commons Plaza. The poster session will then be taken indoors to tour the campus, making week-long stops at various libraries including the professional schools, and will be archived in the permanent library collections.

For more information or to request a submission form, send e-mail to wff@yale.edu.
