Visitors to the Sterling Memorial Library's Fall Open House Day on Saturday, Sept. 30, will have the opportunity to see highlights of its collections, talk to librarians and archivists about their old books or other documents of personal value, search for "treasures" (for children) and watch demonstrations of international programs and digitization and preservation initiatives.
The open house will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library, 120 High St. All members of the Yale community and public are welcome.
Highlights of the event include:
* "Journey of Discovery" -- visitors can meet curators and library staff as they display selections from Manuscripts and Archives and other special and area studies collections;
* Self-guided tours of the library's architecture, stained glass and reading rooms;
* "This Old Stuff," 2-4 p.m. only -- an opportunity for people to bring printed family heirlooms and talk to librarians, archivists and conservators about them;
* View exhibits, including "The American Museum of Natural History's Margaret Mead Traveling Film and Video Festival at Yale," "Black Gold: Geopolitics of Oil in the Middle East" and "Croatia: Themes, Authors, Books";
* A children's treasure hunt;
* Library information table -- various items will be given away or will be on sale.
Sterling Memorial Library -- the University's largest campus library -- hosts two open houses each year.
