Sports columnist Christine Brennan
is this year's first Chubb Fellow

Sports journalist Christine Brennan will deliver the first Chubb Lecture of the new school year on Monday, Oct. 2, at 4:30 p.m. in Rm. 127 of the Law School, 127 Wall St.

Brennan's column in USA Today makes her the most widely read woman sports columnist in the nation. In 2001 and again in 2003, she was named by the Associated Press Sports Editors as one of the nation's top 10 sports columnists in the category of the nation's largest newspapers.

An on-air commentator for ABC News and ESPN, Brennan reported from the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens, and the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Salt Lake City and Torino, as well as other sports venues. She has appeared on a variety of network and cable shows over the past decade, including ESPN's "SportsCenter," ABC's "Nightline," "Good Morning America" and "World News Tonight," and NBC's "Today Show." She also is a commentator on NPR's "Morning Edition" and Fox Sports Radio.

The author of six books, Brennan has won the Women's Sports Foundation's journalism award four times. She wrote two best-selling books about skating, "Inside Edge" -- named one of the top 100 sports books of all time by Sports Illustrated -- and "Edge of Glory." Her 2006 memoir, "Best Seat in the House: A Father, A Daughter, A Journey Through Sports," is the first father-daughter memoir written by a sports writer.

The Chubb Fellowship is devoted to encouraging and aiding Yale students interested in the operations of government, culture and public service. Established in 1936 through the generosity of Hendon Chubb (Yale 1895), the program is based in Timothy Dwight College. Each year three or four distinguished women and men have been appointed as visiting Chubb Fellows. While at Yale, they have close, informal contact with students and deliver a public lecture. Former Chubb Fellows include U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter; President Raul Alfonsin of Argentina; Prime Ministers Clement Atlee (United Kingdom) and Mario Soares (Portugal); authors Toni Morrison and Carlos Fuentes; choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov; and journalist Walter Cronkite.
