Mark Malloch Brown

Lecture will examine the U.N.
and 21st-century challenges

Mark Malloch Brown, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, will visit the campus on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Brown will discuss "The United Nations in the 21st Century: The Challenge of Managing Global Change" at 5 p.m. in Levinson Auditorium, Sterling Law Buildings, 127 Wall St. The talk is free and open to the public.

As he prepares to leave office at the end of the term of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Brown will reflect on the challenges for the United Nations in the years ahead, from the Middle East to the Millennium Development Goals.

Brown has served as chef de cabinet to the secretary-general since 2005. In that position, he has worked closely with the secretary-general and the deputy-secretary general on all aspects of U.N. work, including helping to set out a reform agenda for the United Nations.

Brown also led the U.N. system's efforts to help support the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals -- eight time-bound development targets with the overarching goal of halving extreme poverty by 2015 -- which were approved by world leaders at the U.N. Millennium Summit in 2000.

Brown previously served as administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the U.N.'s global development network, from 1999 to 2005. During his tenure at the UNDP, Brown oversaw a comprehensive reform effort that was widely recognized as making the UNDP more focused, efficient and effective across the 166 countries where it works and doubled its annual resources to over $4 billion.
