Dr. Barry Zaret, the Robert W. Berliner Professor of Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology, will exhibit a collection of new artworks at the Westville Gallery, 899 Whalley Ave. Titled "Landscape Journey: From the Berkshires to the Mediterranean; New Works by Dr. Barry Zaret," the exhibition will run Thursday, Oct. 19, to Wednesday, Nov. 8. An opening reception will held 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19. Zaret has been actively painting for 15 years. He works almost exclusively in oils and concentrates predominantly on landscapes. His paintings have been shown at the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, the Greene Gallery in Guilford and the Greater New Haven Jewish Community Center. Zaret's work is also a part of private collections in New York City, London, Jerusalem, Cairo, Hong Kong and Prague, among others.
Westin M. Amberge, a student at the School of Medicine, was named a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar. The scholarship covers tuition, room, board, fees and books -- up to $50,000 annually -- for up to six years. The scholarships are among the most generous academic awards offered in the United States. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation established in 2000 by the estate of Jack Kent Cooke to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. It focuses in particular on students with financial need. Amberge, who is from Blairsville, Georgia, attended the University of Georgia.
Several affiliates from the School of Music will be featured in a classical music concert on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. The concert, presented by the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences (CAAS), will be held at Garner Recital Hall in Engleman Hall on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), Fitch Street, in New Haven. The two-hour concert will also feature artists from the Juilliard School, Moscow State Conservatory, Oberlin, SUNY, SCSU, Mannes College, and faculty from the Neighborhood Music School, Suzuki School of Music, Hartt School of Music and members of area symphony and chamber ensembles. The concert is free and the public is invited. Donations to the Endowment Fund of the Academy will be gratefully received. Admission is by reservation. Jay Winter, the Charles J. Stille Professor of History, and Ute Frevert, professor of history, will discuss Winter's new book, "Dreams of Peace and Freedom: Utopian Moments in the 20th Century," on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 5:30 p.m. John Matthews, the John M. Schiff Professor of Classics and History, will discuss his book, "Journey of Theophanes," on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. Both events, which are free and open to the public, will take place at Labyrinth Books, 290 York St. For more information, call (203) 787-2848.
