Yale Opera singers will stage
annual program of opera scenes

The young singers in the Yale Opera program will hit many a high note when they present their annual program of opera scenes Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28.

Vera Calabria will be the stage director for the performances, which will take place at 8 p.m. both evenings in Sprague Hall, corner of College and Wall streets. Doris Yarick Cross is the artistic director of Yale Opera, a department of the School of Music.

Each evening's program will feature a different repertoire, selected from the following: Act I of Bizet's romantic opera "Djamileh," Act II of Gounod's masterpiece "Faust," the Act II finale of Mozart's classic "Le Nozze di Figaro," the emotional third act of Puccini's "La Bohème" and romantic first and second acts of his "La Rondine" ("The Swallow"). Rounding out the programs will be selections from Stravinsky's moral fable "The Rake's Progress" and a complete performance of William Walton's rarely-staged "The Bear." Surtitles will be employed for all scenes not sung in English.

Tickets are $8 and $12 ($5 for students). For specific information about each evening's program and to purchase tickets, visit the School of Music concert office in the lobby of Sprague Hall during weekday business hours; call (203) 432-4158; or visit the school's website at www.yale.edu/music.

Stage director Calabria has over 20 years of experience in opera and classical music. She has worked extensively with such directors as Gian Carlo Menotti, Harold Prince, Ruth Berghaus and the late Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, among others. She has directed numerous productions throughout the world and teaches Commedia dell'Arte in workshops at several universities, among them California State University-Los Angeles and the University of California in both Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.
