Program to improve physician
training marks 30th year

A symposium celebrating the 30th anniversary of a Yale program that aims to improve the quality of medical training programs at area hospitals will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2.

Titled "Training Physicians for the 21st Century: Challenges & Opportunities," the symposium is sponsored by the Department of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine.

Thirty years ago, Yale's Department of Internal Medicine, under the leadership of Dr. Samuel O. Thier, developed the Yale Affiliated Hospitals Program (YAHP) with nine other hospitals in southern Connecticut to help the institutions improve the quality of their training programs. These included Waterbury, Greenwich, Bridgeport, Norwalk, Danbury, St. Mary's, St. Raphael's and St. Vincent's hospitals. All the hospitals are active in training of specialists in internal medicine, many of whom remain and practice in Connecticut.

YAHP provides approximately 1,000 hours of contact annually between the faculties of the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale with residents in those hospitals. In addition, the residents in the participating hospitals are able to spend several months during their training working at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center alongside faculty, fellows, residents and students from the Yale School of Medicine. With the exception of St. Vincent's, all the original hospitals are still affiliated with the program. Although YAHP has evolved over the decades to include other collaborative educational and research efforts, its core mission continues to be improving the quality of the training of young physicians.

The symposium will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the presentation of the annual Samuel O. Thier Lecture in Health Policy during Medical Grand Rounds in Fitkin Amphitheatre, Boardman Building, 330 Cedar St. The speaker will be Dr. Kenneth Ludmerer of Washington University in St. Louis, who will speak on "The Coming of the Second Revolution in Medical Education."

The program's other presentations will take place 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Anlyan Center, 300 Cedar St. Speakers will dicuss the past, present and future of YAHP and various aspects of training physicians, including the challenges to academic centers, the impact of national organizations, doctors' roles as caregivers for the individual and the community, and the importance of mentorship in the development of future leaders.

In addition to YAHP founder Thier, now professor of health at Harvard University, participants will include Dr. Jerome Kassirer, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine; Dr. David Coleman, chair of the Department of Medicine at Boston University; and Dr. Eric Holmboe, vice president for research at the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The program is open to the Yale community and members of YAHP.
