Exhibit of original menorahs celebrates the Festival of Light
As part of the 2007 Hanukkah celebration, a collection of original menorahs by Yale alumnus O. John Selfridge
is on exhibit through Dec. 22 in the Allan & Leah Rabinowitz Gallery
at Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St.
Selfridge, who holds both a master’s degree in city planning and a doctorate
in epidemiology and public health from Yale, has been creating menorahs for
over 30 years. The chanukiyot in the Slifka Center exhibit were made in the
studio he shares with his spouse, Gail, in Manhattan, Kansas.
His latest collection includes brass, stainless steel and other metal candle
holders combined with ones made from American walnut, osage orange, oak and
other native or exotic woods. One features a 90mm rifle casing as a base. This
work, the artist explains, suggests a link to the origins of Hanukkah, when
the Maccabeans returned to rededicate the Temple of Jerusalem after defeating
the Seleucid Empire. The “Festival of Lights” celebrates the miracle
wherein a single day’s supply of consecrated oil lasted for eight days.
The Rabinowitz Gallery is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
