“States of Departure Paintings,” an exhibit of works by Nathan Margalit, will be on display through Oct. 14 in the Allan & Leah Rabinowitz Gallery at Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St.

Margalit is a renowned painter and printmaker with works in public and private collections in the United States, South Africa, Canada, Australia and Germany. Born in Israel and raised in South Africa, Margalit currently lives and works in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he has his studio.

The artist’s new works are constructed in paint and collage. The raw material used in these works are altered book-pages. The works are primarily created in the Encaustic medium, a painting technique that consists of suspending color pigment in a solution of hot wax and resin. The wax solution serves as both medium and adhesive for the collage elements. Using the hotplate as palette, the paint is applied to the surface of the canvas with brush; the multiple layers of paint fuse through the heating process.

There will be an opening reception and discussion with the artist 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The event is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale (www.yale.edu/slifka) is home to Young Israel House at Yale and Yale Hillel (www.yale.edu/hillel/main.html).
