Carolyn Mazure is recognized for her contributions to women’s health research
Yale faculty member Carolyn M. Mazure has received the 2007 Marion Spencer
Fay Award, which honors a distinguished woman physician or scientist whose
national leadership has had a major impact on research and the application
of science to health care.
Mazure created and directs Yale’s program on health and gender, called
Women’s Health Research at Yale. She is being recognized for the accomplishments
of this innovative program, including the development of new investigations in
women’s health, and for her own research contributions in the field of
depression.
The National Board for Women in Medicine established this award in 1963 in honor
of Marion Spencer Fay, who was the dean and president of Woman’s Medical
College of Pennsylvania 1946-1963. Today the Institute for Women’s Health
and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, which addresses health
issues of women and promotes women in medical education, oversees the award selection.
“Professor Mazure is an outstanding national leader in women’s health
research, and has pioneered the integration of science, educational outreach
and policy development in this field,” said Dr. Robert Alpern, dean of
Yale School of Medicine.
Mazure noted that the honor “highlights the importance of continuing to
study women’s health and gender differences.” She will receive the
award in Philadelphia on Dec. 6.
In addition to being the director of Women’s Health Research at Yale, Mazure
is a professor of psychiatry and associate dean for faculty affairs at Yale School
of Medicine. Past winners include Drs. Mary-Claire King, best known for identifying
breast cancer genes, and Catherine D. DeAngelis, the first woman to be appointed
editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
