School of Music student wins top conducting awards
Darrell Ang, a second-year conducting student at the Yale School of Music, was
the Grand Prize winner at the 50th Besançon International Competition
for Young Conductors in France.
In addition to the Grand Prize of 12,000 Euros, Ang took away the Audience Prize
and was voted best conductor by the musicians of the Orchestre National d’île-de-France.
One of the most prominent competitions in the field of conducting, the Besançon
has helped launch the careers of past winners, including Seiji Ozawa, Sergiu
Commissiona and Yoel Levi, among others.
Ang was one of 20 young conductors aged 25 to 34 from 14 countries who were selected
in first-round tryouts around the world to compete in Besançon, which
was held Sept. 17-22.
Born in Singapore, Ang studied with the composer Leong Yoon-Pin and played the
violin, piano and bassoon. He graduated summa cum laude from the St. Petersburg
Conservatory in 2006, and has studied with Jorma Panula, Sir Colin Davis and
Lorin Maazel. At Yale, he works with Shinik Hahm, music director of the Yale
Philharmonia.
He has conducted widely in Russia, Europe, Asia and North America. In 2001, he
co-founded the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic and was a frequent guest-conductor
at the St. Petersburg Opera and the Rimsky-Korsakov State Opera & Ballet
Theatre. He recently conducted at the Musical Olympus Festival in St. Petersburg,
and the Residentie Orkest in The Hague upon the invitation of music director
Neeme Järvi. Ang’s previous honors include winning the Antonio Pedrotti
International Competition for Conductors in 2006.
