Sustainability is on the
menu at new Library Café
“Nothing but the fresh” might be the motto of the Bass Library
Café, which opens its doors on Tuesday, Oct. 23 (see related story).
The Library Café — a joint project of library staff, Yale University
Dining Services and the Yale Sustainable Food Project — is part of Yale’s
ongoing green campaign. The eatery will serve a wide variety of food items, all
made from fresh ingredients, and its menu will change with the seasons. In an
effort to support Connecticut agriculture, the café will aim to purchase
its produce from local farms. It will only serve organic eggs and hormone- and
antibiotic-free meat. Some of the desserts and breakfast pastries will be produced
in New Haven bakeries.
The take-out packaging material will be biodegradable, and food will be served
inside the café on real plates, bowls and cups.
The café, which is open both to the Yale community and the general public,
will be open for business during library hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-1
a.m.; Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, noon-5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-1 a.m.
