Dr. William E. Bloomer, 84, of Pasadena, California, an alumnus who served for a short time on the Yale faculty, died of cancer on Jan. 14 at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
A graduate of Stanford University, Dr. Bloomer earned his M.D. at the Yale School of Medicine in 1942. After an internship at Stanford University Hospital and service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he returned to Yale in 1946 as a fellow in thoracic surgery and completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
He was assistant professor at the School of Medicine for five years, before moving to California, where he embarked upon his life-long career in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. His achievements include developing innovative techniques for using injection-molded plastics to study the anatomy of the lung. The Yale alumnus continued to teach, and at the time of his death was associate clinical professor of surgery at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine.
Dr. Bloomer is survived by his wife, Cornelia (Lee); his daughter, Lianne Nall; three sons, Will, Robert and Charles; and five grandchildren.
