Sandra Boynton '74, '79 DRA, known world-wide for her illustrations and cartoons, will visit campus on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 29 and 30, as the inaugural Eustace D. Theodore '63 Fellow.
Boynton will first speak at a 5 p.m. tea on Monday at the Calhoun College master's house, 434 College St. A reception in honor of Theodore will immediately follow.
On Tuesday, Boynton will present a program titled "The Curious Misuse of a Yale Education" at 8 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St. The program will feature a conversation with Boynton and a performance of her songs by the Ad Hog Camerata under the direction of former Yale Glee Club Director Fenno Heath '50. All events are free and open to the public.
Boynton started designing greeting cards to support herself while training to become a theater director at the Yale Drama School. Her illustrations of pigs, cats, dogs and other creatures now grace over 8,000 different greeting cards that sell a total of more than 20 million copies each year. A bestseller for years is her birthday card "Hippo Birdie Two Ewes." Boynton's animals are also the heroes of more than 20 books for children and adults, including "Chocolate: The Consuming Passion."
A former member of the Yale Glee Club, Boynton recently began writing children's songs. Her compositions are collected in the book and audiocassette "Rhinoceros Tap" and the album "Grunt: Pigorian Chant from Snouto Domoinko de Silo," which is described as "a good-natured satirical response to the Gregorian Chant phenomenon."
