Exhibition will feature paintings by Gelernter

An exhibition of paintings by Yale computer scientist David Gelernter is on view now through March 23 at the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. The art, primarily a mix of acrylic and pastel or watercolor and pastel, occasionally employs liquid iron, metal leaf and other materials, like pieces of mirrors. Topics range from a still life and self-portrait to religious themes -- such as "M'zuzah, 2000" and "Memorial (Av Ha'rachamim)" -- to semi-abstract works. A reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Sunday, Jan. 28, 3-5 p.m. Known for his research in parallel computing, Gelernter teaches in the University's Department of Computer Science as well as the Yale School of Management. He has written on a wide variety of topics. His articles about art and design have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, City Journal, The Forward and elsewhere, and he has lectured at the Cooper-Hewitt, the Queens Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery. He serves as art critic for the Weekly Standard, where he is a regular contributor. His books include "Drawing Life," "1939: The Lost World of the Fair," "Machine Beauty: Elegance and the Heart of Technology," "The Muse in the Machine: Computerizing the Poetry of Human Thought" as well as many technical publications. He studied at the Art Students' League in Manhattan. An Artist Symposium about the show will be held at the Slifka Chapel at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15.
