ITS announces appointment of new CMI director

Paul Lawrence, formerly of Canada's Banff Center for the Arts, has been appointed director of the Center for Media Initiatives (CMI), according to an announcement by Philip Long, acting director of Information Technology Services (ITS) and director of its Academic Media & Technology Department.

Under Lawrence's direction, the CMI will provide a focal point for learning and teaching involving leading-edge media and technology across the University.

At the Banff Center, Lawrence was director of media production and training services. There, he built a new vision and business plan expanding access to technology, developing new training programs and completing several television and new media production initiatives.

Over the past 15 years, Lawrence has produced and directed a wide variety of documentaries, commercial work and interactive media projects. As executive producer of television and new media, he spearheaded the redevelopment of the University of British Columbia's television and multimedia production area. Lawrence also lectured in digital postproduction techniques for the university's Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing.

As a platform for innovation, the CMI intends to advance the state of the practice for use of media across the University. It will identify, generalize and, through its close links to ITS Academic Media & Technology, disseminate innovations to the campus community. The CMI will be integral in coordinating and partnering with similar organizations located in various schools and departments at Yale.
