Denise Miller

Art gallery appoints its first deputy director

Denise Miller, director of The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago for 16 years, has been named to the newly created post of deputy director for programs and external affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery.

"Not only is she a highly skilled administrator and fundraiser, Denise possesses a broad knowledge of art and artists, and is a devoted educator and institution builder," said Jock Reynolds, the Henry J. Heinz II Director of the gallery. "As a key member of the gallery's core management team, she will help this venerable teaching museum grow in important new ways."

At The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Miller curated more than 200 critically acclaimed exhibitions. During her tenure, the museum amassed a permanent collection of more than 6,000 photographs, installations and photographic objects by a range of contemporary artists born or living in the United States. Under her leadership, it became only the second photography museum in the country to be accredited by the American Association of Museums (it was reaccredited last March).

She received support from various foundations for her award-winning educational programs, which partnered international corporations and Chicago metropolitan secondary and postsecondary schools. She is the author of numerous volumes on contemporary art, including "Photography's Multiple Roles: Art, Document, Market, Science," which won the bronze medal for best international art book at the 1999 Frankfurt/Leipzig book fairs.

Miller was also principal professor in the museum studies program at Columbia College Chicago. From 1986 until 1989, she was a visiting professor at the Graham School of Management, Saint Xavier University, Chicago. She holds a B.A. in business and fine art and an M.B.A. in international business and management from Saint Xavier University, Chicago.
