Remembrance Service

The Chaplain's Office will present a service of remembrance in Battell Chapel, Elm and College streets, on Thursday, Dec. 13, noon-1 p.m.

The service, titled "A Service of Music, Silence and Light," will provide an opportunity for all members of the community -- undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff -- to mark death and loss as needed. Individuals may come for part or all of the entire hour.

For more information, call the Reverend Cynthia A. Terry at (203) 432-1131.

Weight Watchers at Work

A new 14-week Weight Watchers at Work series will begin at University Health Services (YUHS), 17 Hillhouse Ave., on Monday, Jan. 14.

The series will feature the "Winning Points Program," which will help participants understand their eating preferences and allow them to adapt food choices for maximum weight loss. Meetings will be held on Mondays, 12:15-1 p.m., in Rm. 405 at YUHS. A free open meeting and registration will be held on Monday, Jan. 7, at 12:15 p.m.

The fee for the series is $162.50 with a minimum of 20 members. Payment is due at the open meeting and may be made by cash, check, MasterCard, Visa, Discover card or American Express. Split payment is available. For more information or to register, call (203) 432-1892.

Food Bank

The Yale Medical Group (YMG) is sponsoring a holiday food drive for the Connecticut Food Bank.

Donations of canned food and non-perishable, unopened food items will be accepted through Dec. 18. Items may be placed in food drive boxes at the front lobby of the Yale Physicians Building, 800 Howard Ave., or the lobby of the YMG administrative offices, 300 George St. For more information, contact Linda Borer at (203) 785-5144 or Tony Fusco at (203) 785-3438.

Art exhibit

An exhibition of artworks by Carmelina Mosher, an expressive arts therapist and educator, will be on display in the library of the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St., beginning Dec. 1.

Titled "Peace," the exhibit includes more than 20 acrylic paintings completed over the past year. Paintings range in size from 5" x 7" to 16" x 20", and exhibit the artist's cultural heritage. While Mosher is a Penobscot of the Abenaki tribe from Maine, her art explores a mythology that people of all ages and cultures can appreciate.

The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be on display until Jan. 4. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 1-4 p.m. Exhibition hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-midnight; Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-midnight. For more information, call (203) 785-5355.

'Family Day' at the Art Gallery

The Yale University Art Gallery will host a "Family Day" on Sunday, Dec. 9, 1:30- 4 p.m., in conjunction with the exhibition "Myer Myers: Jewish Silversmith in Colonial New York."

Highlights of the event will include a play about Colonial American Jewish life, a silversmithing presentation, Hanukkah hands-on art activities and live klezmer music. The event is free and open to the public.

Throughout the afternoon there will be demonstrations by the acclaimed New Haven silversmith, Derek Simpson, and live music by the Yale Klezmer Band. Participants will be encouraged to make their own holiday decorations and gifts at artist-led worktables. Light refreshments from the Westville Kosher Bakery will be available.

At 2 p.m. in the McNeil Lecture Hall, two students from the School of Drama will perform Allan Appel's "Dear Heartsey," a play based on the letters from Abigail Franks to her son, from 1733 to 1748. Franks' letters have contributed significantly to the understanding of American Jewish history, providing rare insight into everyday family, political and social life in New York during the Colonial period.

For more information about Family Day and other related programs, call the Education Department at (203) 432-8459.

Figure skating club

The Yale Figure Skating Club will begin its winter sessions on Jan. 5.

The club offers programs for skaters of all ages, levels and interests. Weekend sessions at Ingalls Rink include basic skills classes, beginner hockey classes, dance, moves-in-the-field, practice ice and freestyle. For more information, call (203) 432-1233.
