Sarah Rothenberg

Piano performance piece
to open Yale Rep series

The world premiere of "Epigraph for a Condemned Book" by award- winning pianist and director Sarah Rothenberg will launch the Yale Repertory Theatre's 2001-2002 Special Events Series in January.

Also scheduled this year are the launch of the spring tour by nationally acclaimed humorist David Sedaris and the return to New Haven of international performance artist Rhodessa Jones.

The workshop presentation of "Epigraph for a Condemned Book" will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, in the University Theatre, 320 York St.

The performance piece brings together the music of Chopin and the poetry of Baudelaire with a combination of piano, theatrical lighting and video display. Writing about Rothenberg in The New York Times, Bernard Holland said, "This is a pianist of character -- with a booming attack, a cushioned sound and a pointed enthusiasm. . . ."

Since 1994, Rothenberg has been artistic director of Da Camera of Houston, where she has received international attention for her performances in unique programs that she conceives and directs. She has performed to audiences around the world, including at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Lincoln Center in New York City and the Aldeburgh Festival in England. She is joined by award-winning lighting designer and Yale School of Drama faculty member Jennifer Tipton, recent recipient of the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and video designer Chris Kondek, veteran of The Wooster Group.

The series will continue with the launch of humorist David Sedaris' tour on Tuesday, April 2, at 8 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. A commentator on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition," Sedaris is the author of the best sellers "Barrel Fever," "Holidays on Ice," "Naked," and most recently, "Me Talk Pretty One Day."

Performance artist Rhodessa Jones will round out the Special Events Series with "Hot Flashes, Power Surges & Private Summers" on Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. An award-winning actress, dancer, singer, writer and teacher, Jones is director and founder of "The Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women" and co-artistic director of the San Francisco theater company Cultural Odyssey.

Yale Repertory Theatre's Special Events Series has brought a variety of artists to Yale including Bill Irwin, Karen Finley, Paula Poundstone, Reno, Tim Miller, Mump & Smoot, Urban Bush Women, Spalding Gray, Diamanda Galas, Eric Bogosian, David Cale, Holly Hughes, John Kelly, Astrid Haddad and The Bacon Brothers.

Series tickets are currently on sale for $50, and provide patrons with one ticket to each of the three events, with preferred seating where applicable. Single tickets for "Epigraph for a Condemned Book" are now on sale. Single tickets for David Sedaris and Rhodessa Jones go on sale Monday, Jan. 14, and prices range from $15 to $25, with discounts for students, seniors and Yale Rep subscribers.
